The Sinking City 2 Dream Essence

Last verified · TSC2 Wiki

Dream Essence is earned by finding clues and correctly connecting related ones in the Investigation Space, and as a reward for completing optional investigations. It is spent at the Talent Table in safe rooms, and each talent costs a different amount.

Official"Find clues scattered across the level. Then, in the Investigation Space, correctly connect related clues." Dream Essence is also earned from Optional Investigations — Frogwares' own FAQ.

Where essence actually comes from

The Sinking City 2 Dream Essence economy has two sources, and both require searching:

  • Clue connections. Pick up documents and evidence, then link the related ones correctly in the Investigation Space. Correct deductions pay out.
  • Optional investigations. The game's side cases. These are the densest single source, and they are entirely skippable — which is exactly why under-talented runs happen.

There is no farming route in the usual sense: no combat source, no shop, no crafting, and no repeatable rewards. Essence is the reward the game gives you for engaging with the detective half of its design.

How to earn more of it

  1. Pick up everything readable. A document you walked past is essence you did not earn.
  2. Do the optional investigations in every chapter, before the chapter closes.
  3. Connect carefully. The pay-off is for correct connections, so slow down in the menu rather than clicking through it.
  4. Sweep side rooms. The objective route does not pass most clue locations, which is the same reason it does not pass most ERC crates.

Why this matters more than it sounds

The Sinking City 2 Dream Essence is the only route to talents, and talents are the only progression system in the game besides weapons. A run that skips investigations arrives at Cold Comfort with a fraction of the build a thorough run has, fighting the same final boss.

It also compounds with resources: fewer talents means more deaths, more deaths means more ammunition spent repeating fights.

Spend it, do not bank it

Unspent essence does nothing at all. Because the Talent Table only appears from the third safe room, new players often accumulate a pile early and then forget to spend it once the table opens.

Make it a habit: every time you reach a safe room, save at the conch player, stash what you cannot carry, and check whether you can afford another talent.

Essence rewards from optional cases

Optional investigations pay essence rewards on completion, which makes them the closest thing this game has to a quest reward. They are self-contained within a chapter, they use the same searching and deduction as the main thread, and they are the reason two players on the same difficulty can have very different back halves.

Do them as you meet them rather than saving them up. Chapters close, and an unfinished case pays nothing.

Missable essence

Clues and optional investigations are chapter-locked like everything else — there is no chapter select, so an investigation left unfinished when a chapter ends is essence you will not get on this run.

The missable checklist includes investigations for exactly this reason.

How much do you need?

More than one playthrough of The Sinking City 2 provides. Full talent coverage is a New Game Plus goal, and Ex Oblivione Mode is where players typically finish the tree. On a first run, plan to afford four to six talents rather than all of them, and choose them by symptom — the best talents page works through that.

The Sinking City 2 FAQ

How do I get Dream Essence?

Find clues and connect the related ones correctly in the Investigation Space, and complete optional investigations.

Can I farm Dream Essence?

Not repeatedly — clues and investigations are finite per chapter and do not respawn. Thorough searching is the only way to earn more.

What happens to essence I do not spend?

Nothing. It sits there. Spend it at the Talent Table as you go.
