The Sinking City 2 Best Talents
Last verified · TSC2 Wiki
With only four slots, the best talents in The Sinking City 2 are the ones that fix your actual problem. Start with survivability — picks such as Deathless Vigor and Unhallowed Salve that let Calvin absorb a mistake and recover — then add resource economy, then damage.
Cross-checkedConfirmed against several independent walkthroughs of the build 1.0 (launch build, August 2026) on August 22, 2026. Codes and sequences in this game are fixed, not randomised per save. If a patch changes this, tell us on the contact page and we will re-check and re-date the page.
The Sinking City 2 — quick facts
| Slots | Four: one round, three diamond |
|---|---|
| First priority | Survivability |
| Second priority | Resource and ammunition economy |
| Third priority | Raw damage |
| Unlocks at | The third safe room |
| Respec | Not confirmed by Frogwares |
Why survivability comes first
The failure state in The Sinking City 2 is almost never "I did not do enough damage". It is "I got surrounded in a corridor and had nothing left". Talents that keep Calvin standing through a bad thirty seconds — Deathless Vigor, Unhallowed Salve and their tier-mates — convert those moments into survivable ones.
The Sinking City 2 best talents also save resources indirectly: every death is a reload, and every reload is ammunition spent twice on the same enemies.
Picking by symptom
| What keeps killing you | What to equip |
|---|---|
| Getting surrounded | Survivability and recovery talents |
| Running out of ammunition | Economy talents, plus the stomp habit |
| Elites soaking damage | Weak-point and damage talents, paired with the Bucking Bronco |
| Dying on the way back to a safe room | Recovery talents, and consider dropping the difficulty for that stretch |
That table is the entire method. There is no universal best build, because the four slots are too few to cover everything and the game asks different questions in different chapters.
Round slot versus diamond slots
You equip one round-slot talent and three diamond-slot talents. Treat the round slot as your keystone — the one effect you want active in every fight — and the diamond slots as the adjustable part of the build.
In practice that means the round slot rarely changes once you have found something that suits you, while the diamonds get swapped between chapters as the enemy mix shifts.
Spend essence, do not bank it
Unspent Dream Essence in The Sinking City 2 does nothing. Because there is no respec confirmed by Frogwares, players sometimes hoard essence waiting for a perfect build — that is a mistake in a ten-hour game. An equipped talent now beats a theoretical talent later.
If you are worried about wasting essence, the reassurance is structural: full talent coverage takes two playthroughs anyway, and Ex Oblivione Mode is where the rest gets filled in.
Talents by chapter
- Chapters 1–2: no talents at all. The Talent Table opens at the third safe room.
- Chapter 3 (Akeley Hospital): survivability. The hospital is dense with encounters and ends with the Shoggoth.
- Chapter 4 (Time and Tide): economy. This is where supplies are richest and where you build the reserve for the finale.
- Chapter 5 (Cold Comfort): whatever gets you through corridors — Slither Prime is a damage check.
A first-run shopping order
- Survivability in the round slot, as soon as the third safe room opens.
- A recovery effect in the first diamond slot.
- Economy in the second, once chapter 4's supply pressure starts.
- Damage or weak-point in the third, for the finale.
That order matches the shape of the game: chapter 3 punishes fragility, chapter 4 punishes waste, and chapter 5 is a damage check. Buying in that sequence means each talent arrives in the chapter that needed it.
What we can and cannot tell you
Being verifiedWe name talents we can source and describe the categories confidently. We are still logging exact costs and numeric effects for the full list, and we will not publish invented figures to fill the table.
Everything on this page about slots, tiers and unlock timing comes from Frogwares' own FAQ, which is linked in the sources below.
The Sinking City 2 FAQ
Which talent should I unlock first?
A survivability talent such as Deathless Vigor or Unhallowed Salve. Staying alive through a bad encounter is worth more than extra damage in a game this stingy with ammunition.
How many talents can I have active?
Four: one round-slot talent and three diamond-slot talents.
Can I respec my talents?
Frogwares has not confirmed a respec system, so treat unlocks as decisions. Full coverage takes a second playthrough regardless.
