The Sinking City 2 1908 Safe Code

Last verified · TSC2 Wiki

The first safe in The Sinking City 2 opens with 1908. The number is the year printed on the radio shop sign outside the building — step back into the street, look up at the storefront, and the date is written across it.

Where the safe is

You meet this safe in the first proper interior of A New Day, while the game is still teaching you how searching works. It sits in the same building complex as the radio shop, and the game expects you to walk out, read the sign and walk back in.

That round trip is the puzzle. If you have been standing in front of the dial trying combinations, the answer was never in the room — this is the first instance of the rule that holds for the whole game: the clue is physically present, usually within thirty seconds of the lock.

The clue on the radio shop sign

Head outside and face the shop front. The signage carries an established date — 1908 — in the way period storefronts advertised how long they had been trading. Reading it also drops the associated evidence into your journal, which matters more than it looks: evidence feeds the Investigation Space, and that is the only source of Dream Essence for talents.

Enter 1908 on the dial and the safe opens.

What is inside and why it matters this early

The contents are unglamorous — supplies — but chapter 1 is where The Sinking City 2 is stingiest. You have no talents yet (the Talent Table only appears at the third safe room), your inventory is small until you find an upgrade, and every fight costs more ammunition than it returns. An extra handful of rounds here changes whether you fight or run for the next twenty minutes.

Do not leave A New Day without sweeping it

There is no chapter select in this game. When A New Day ends, everything you left in it is gone until New Game Plus. Before you move on:

If 1908 does not work

  • You are at the watergate, not the safe. That takes 1672. The two chapter 1 numbers get swapped constantly.
  • You are at an ERC crate. Crates have no dial — they need an activator pen.
  • You set the dial but did not confirm. Spinning to the number is not the same as opening it.

What this safe teaches about the rest of the game

Chapter 1 is a tutorial that never says it is one, and this safe is the clearest lesson in it. Three habits start here and pay off for the next ten hours.

  • Go outside. When a lock has no clue in the room, the clue is usually on the building's exterior — signage, plaques, bells, gravestones.
  • Read before you loot. The document carrying a code is also an evidence item, and evidence is what buys talents later.
  • Sweep before you advance. Story beats in The Sinking City 2 close chapters behind you without warning.

The very next lock, the watergate, is the same puzzle with a bell instead of a sign.
