The Sinking City 2 Watergate Puzzle and Code
Last verified · TSC2 Wiki
The watergate mechanism in The Sinking City 2 opens with 1672. The number is the year the bell was installed, written on the bell itself, and the game expects you to read it there rather than deduce it. Enter the four digits and the gate cycles open.
Cross-checkedConfirmed against several independent walkthroughs of the build 1.0 (launch build, August 2026) on August 22, 2026. Codes and sequences in this game are fixed, not randomised per save. If a patch changes this, tell us on the contact page and we will re-check and re-date the page.

The code and where it comes from
The floodgate code, 1672, is not a combination anyone has to guess. It is stamped as an installation year on the bell near the mechanism, and reading it is the puzzle. The Sinking City 2 uses this pattern for most of its numeric locks: a date exists somewhere in the room, and the lock wants exactly that date.
If you want the honest version of the experience, look at the bell before you open the panel. If you are just unblocking yourself, enter 1672 and move on.
Step-by-step
- Approach the watergate control panel. It sits beside the gate itself, on the walkway.
- Read the bell. The installation year is legible on the casting — 1672.
- Enter 1672 on the panel dials.
- Confirm and wait. The gate machinery cycles; the water level and the route change once it finishes.
What the watergate opens up
Opening the gate changes how you move through the district: flooded Arkham is navigated by boat as much as on foot, and the gates are how the game routes you between areas. See the Arkham map page for how districts and boat routes connect.
Do not ram the gate or the pier with the boat on your way through. That is not a superstition — Frogwares lists boat collisions in its own known-issues post as a cause of a black screen that needs a reload.
If 1672 is not accepted
- Check you are at the watergate panel, not another four-digit lock nearby. Chapter 1 also contains the 1908 house safe, and the two get mixed up.
- Enter the digits in order left to right. Some panels in this game let you spin each dial independently, which makes a mis-set first digit easy to miss.
- Confirm the input. Setting the dials is not the same as pressing the lever.
How the gate fits into chapter 1
A New Day is built as a loop: the church sequence to the north, the flooded street level to the south, and the watergate as the valve between them. Opening it is what lets you finish the chapter's errands rather than a hard story gate, so if you have been circling the same three streets wondering what you missed, this is usually it.
Before you push on, sweep what the gate opened up. Chapter transitions are one-way, and the missable checklist exists because A New Day hides an ERC crate, several evidence items and the 1908 safe in corners people leave behind.
Numeric locks in this chapter
Chapter 1 has two number locks and they are frequently confused with one another.
| Lock | Code | Clue |
|---|---|---|
| House safe | 1908 | The year on the radio shop sign outside |
| Watergate | 1672 | The installation year cast into the bell |
Both follow the same design rule, and both are dates. When you meet a keypad later in the game, look for a year before you look for anything cleverer — the exceptions are the salt storage numerals and the 6294 office safe.
