How the system works
Three things gate your build in The Sinking City 2, and they are all connected:
- Find clues. Documents and evidence scattered through every chapter.
- Connect them correctly in the Investigation Space. Correct connections pay Talent Points and Dream Essence; optional investigations pay essence too.
- Spend it at the Talent Table in a safe room, from the third one onward.
That chain is why the "optional" detective work is not optional in any meaningful sense. Skipping it is choosing a harder game.
Tiers and slots
Talents run across four tiers, from Basic up to Expert, with higher tiers costing more essence. You can have four equipped at a time — one round slot and three diamond slots — so the build question is always which four, not which twenty.
Because a single playthrough does not generate enough essence for everything, full talent coverage is a New Game Plus project.
Which to unlock first
Across The Sinking City 2 talents, the consensus picks are survivability ones — the ones that give Calvin room to absorb a mistake and recover from it, such as Deathless Vigor and Unhallowed Salve. In a game where ammunition is scarce and enemies hit hard, staying alive through a bad encounter is worth more than incremental damage.
That said, there is no universally correct first pick. The useful question is what is actually killing your runs — the best talents page works through it by playstyle.
Why chapters 1 and 2 feel harsh
Because you have no build. The Talent Table does not appear until the third safe room, so the opening two chapters are played with base capabilities and whatever weapons the game has handed you.
That is deliberate pacing, not difficulty tuning gone wrong. It also means the essence you bank early has somewhere to go the moment the table opens — another reason to pick up every document in A New Day.
Talents and difficulty
Talents are not a substitute for the difficulty slider, and you should not treat them as one. All four modes are switchable at any time from the pause menu with no trophy penalty, so if a fight is going badly the fix is available immediately — see difficulty settings.
What talents change is the texture of play: how often you can afford a mistake, how far your ammunition stretches, how survivable the long walk back to a safe room is.
Talents versus weapons
Weapons decide what you can kill. Talents decide what you can survive while doing it. Because ammunition is finite and enemies are not generous, most runs are lost to the second problem rather than the first — which is the whole argument for treating investigation as mandatory.
The two systems meet in a single habit: focused aim at weak points, backed by a talent that lets you stand still long enough to take the shot. Everything else in the build is refinement.
