The Sinking City 2 Star Key: Where to Find It
Last verified · TSC2 Wiki
The Star Key is looted from a corpse outside the church, lying near the gate lever you pull to open the churchyard. It opens two things: the second-floor door inside the church, where the trident is mounted, and the small outbuilding in the grounds, which holds an ERC crate.

Finding the Star Key
The church is the first place in The Sinking City 2 that looks like it has a locked door you are meant to come back for. It is not — you can open it immediately, and the key is roughly ten metres away.
Approach the churchyard and look for the gate lever. A body lies near it. Loot it and you have the Star Key. Players miss this because the fight and the ambience push you toward the church entrance, and the corpse reads as scenery.
What the Star Key opens
The upper-floor door. Inside the church, take the stairs and use the key on the locked door. The trident is mounted here, and you need it for the obelisk in the grounds. You will be bringing it back to this exact mount afterwards, so remember the room.
The outbuilding. In the churchyard there is a small separate structure — an outhouse, effectively — tucked against the wall. The same key opens it, and inside is an ERC crate. Remember that a crate needs an ERC Activator Pen before it will open — if you do not have one yet, note the outhouse location and come back within the chapter, because you cannot return after it ends.
That is two separate rewards from one key, and the outhouse is the one players skip. It is worth the detour: chapter 1 is where ammunition economy is tightest, and an early ERC crate changes how much you can afford to fight rather than run.
Why the star door matters later
Everything in the church sequence chains from this key: Star Key → trident → obelisk → charged trident → the alternate-dimension version of the church with the statues. If you are following the walkthrough for chapter 1, this is the pivot point of the whole area.
It is also the game teaching a rule it never states outright: in The Sinking City 2, the key to a door is almost always in the same space as the door, usually on a body. Later chapters repeat this with the Staff Key, the Vertebral Key and the Caduceus Key — all indexed on the keys and doors page.
If the Star Key is not on the corpse
- You are at the wrong body. Several corpses sit around the churchyard; the one you want is the one beside the gate lever, not the ones inside the fence.
- You already picked it up. Check the key section of your inventory rather than your consumables — quest keys are filed separately.
- You have not opened the gate yet. Pull the lever first; the approach to the corpse is on the far side.
- You are looking for a keypad. The star door is a physical lock, not a code — no combination will open it. The numeric locks in this chapter are the 1908 safe and the 1672 watergate.
The Sinking City 2 FAQ
Where is the Star Key in The Sinking City 2?
On a corpse outside the church, right next to the gate lever. It is easy to walk past because the body reads as set dressing.
What is behind the star door?
The trident, mounted on the church's upper floor. You need it for the obelisk puzzle in the churchyard, and you bring the charged trident back to the same mount afterwards.
Is the churchyard outbuilding worth opening?
Yes — it contains an ERC crate with ammunition and supplies, and it becomes unreachable once A New Day ends, because there is no chapter select.
